Hiring Military Veterans—How Your Company Can Benefit

Lately there has been a lot of concern in articles and blogs about how many new employees are coming into companies lacking the loyalty, dedication, and work ethic employers have come to expect from a generation earlier. True, times are changing, but there is an employee base returning to the workforce that comes with many of these values intact—our military veteran.

In this time of economic turmoil when jobs are scarce and so many of our vets are returning from overseas conflicts, utilizing your armed services workforce can help an employer see cost savings in recruitment and training of good employees. What makes a veteran such a sought after employee? This is what many military employers are finding:

· Individuals who live the military lifestyle have a background of commitment: to themselves, to each other, and to an employer who treats them well. This commitment and loyalty fosters their need to go above and beyond when asked to complete a project. They are prompt and used to reporting for work on time and know the importance of a professional appearance and presence. Military employees know how to take responsibility for projects, tasks, and personal actions. They are trained to see things through to their conclusion. Pentagon helps troops move into civilian life

The Pentagon is launching an effort to prepare servicemembers for life after the military even as they begin training and serving as combat troops.

The hope is to reduce the joblessness that has stubbornly plagued veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Last month, 10% of these veterans, or more than 200,000 former servicemembers, were without work, . The overall U.S. jobless rate is 7.9%. The veteran problem is even worse among those ages 24 and younger. One in four are jobless, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With the Iraq war over, the Afghanistan conflict winding down and a downsizing of the military underway, 1.2 million soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines will go through at least initial phases of the new transition effort in the next four years.

"This is a cultural change for the Department of Defense," says Susan Kelly, deputy director of the Pentagon office handling the program, "We are saying not only do military members need to be military-ready, mission-ready, but we're also asking for the first time for them to meet (civilian) career readiness standards before they separate."

The initiative was the result of legislation passed by Congress last year and presidential task force recommendations.

"It goes to the heart of taking care of the people that fight for us," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday of the program.

Afterburner, an Atlanta-based leadership consulting firm, continued its work with the NFL Player Engagement program as it hosted a dynamic, multi-media keynote for the Washington Redskins at Fedex Field during the team’s bye week. The seminar featured the firm’s innovative Flawless Execution® model, which combines strategic processes and continuous improvement initiatives used by military elite to achieve individual and team alignment.

The Redskins saw a slow start to the 2012 season, but have shown a revitalized energy following their bye week training with a 31-6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. After the keynote, the players participated in a lively Q & A with the consultants on how to best implement the comprehensive model on the field to facilitate better communication among team members. By applying Flawless Execution, the team will foster a mutually supportive continuous improvement environment that will lead to increased efficiency in all areas of the game.

The event was led by F/A-18 Hornet instructor pilot Patrick “Lips” Houlahan, as well as former Blue Angel pilot Scott “Intake” Kartvedt and M1 Abrams Tank Gunner Scott “Gunner” Leonard. The consultants, who have all experienced the need for truly flawless execution in hostile territory, discussed with the Redskins how the combat-derived approach is not only applicable to professional sports, but is integral to a successful season. Key components of the Flawless Execution model, including increased communication and thorough planning and debriefing, will help the team return to the field with a renewed mission objective for the 2012 season.

The Player Engagement program is an initiative introduced by the league to assist in the continuing professional and personal development of players. The Redskins are one of five teams Afterburner will work with this season, including the St. Louis Rams, Green Bay Packers, and Denver Broncos, as well as a second partnership with Super Bowl XLVI champions, the New York Giants.

Following the training, veteran tight end Chris Cooley stated, "This was some of the best training I’ve received in my 10 year career." Fellow tight end Logan Paulson echoed Cooley’s comments, adding, "We are asked to go through a lot of this. It was nice to be presented with something we can use on or off the field."
